DeRemer is the third Cabinet member appointed by President Donald Trump to leave her post. Her resignation comes “after a series of alleged abuses of her position’s power, including having an affair with a subordinate and drinking alcohol on the job,” states an Associated Press article authored by Seung Min Kim. She is also being investigated for allegations that she used the agency’s resources for personal trips.

According to White House spokesperson Steven Cheung, DeRemer will leave the Administration to take a position in the private sector. Cheung said about DeRemer that “…she has done a phenomenal job in her role by protecting American workers, enacting fair labor practices, and helping Americans gain additional skills to improve their lives.”

Keith Sonderling, the current deputy labor secretary and Boca Raton native, has been named acting labor secretary in DeRemer’s place. Before becoming the deputy labor secretary, Sonderling served from September 2020 until August 2024 as a commissioner of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. He was the Commission’s vice-chair between 2020 and 2021.

BocaRatonNewsNow.com states “Keith Sonderling’s legal career started at the law firm Gunster in West Palm Beach. He was later appointed by former Florida Governor Rick Scott to serve as a Commissioner on the Fourth District Court of Appeals Judicial Nominating Commission. He is a respected South Floridian known for putting people in front of politics.”

Keith is the son of Dr. Howard Sonderling, now retired, one of the nation’s leading Gastroenterologists. Keith graduated from the University of Florida Magna Cum Laude. He also is a graduate of the Shepherd School of Law at Nova Southeastern University.
