BOCA RATON, FL – They were once the faces of high-society drama on The Real Housewives of Pretoria, but Melany “Mel” Viljoen and her husband Petrus “Peet” Viljoen are now facing a much grimmer reality. The couple was arrested in Boca Raton last week following an investigation into a months-long “ticket-switching” scheme that allegedly defrauded a local Publix of thousands of dollars.
The Arrest
Newly released bodycam footage shows the moment Boca Raton police pulled over the couple’s black Range Rover on March 10, 2026. According to the arrest affidavit, the vehicle matched the one seen on surveillance footage leaving the scene of multiple retail thefts.
In the video, a seemingly calm Mel Viljoen is seen being handcuffed while her husband, a former South African attorney, watches the proceedings. The two were booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on felony charges of aggravated grand retail theft.
The “Survival Mode” Defense
According to police reports, the Viljoens didn’t just walk out with bags of groceries; they allegedly engaged in a calculated “ticket-switching” operation. Investigators say the couple would scan barcodes from cheaper items while bagging high-priced goods. Over a six-month period beginning in August 2025, police say the pair stole 392 items totaling more than $5,300.
Among the “stolen” goods were luxury staples including:
- La Marca Prosecco
- San Pellegrino sparkling mineral water
- Maison Perrier flavored water
- Fresh fruit and household essentials like toilet paper.
When confronted by investigators, Mel Viljoen reportedly confessed to the thefts, claiming she was in “survival mode.” She told officers she had been unable to find legal work since arriving in the United States because she lacked a proper work visa. While Mel claimed she acted alone, police allege the surveillance footage shows a coordinated effort where Peet would often distract employees while Mel manipulated the self-checkout scanners.
A Fall from Grace
The arrests mark a stunning decline for the couple, who rose to international fame on the Afrikaans-language installment of the Real Housewives franchise. Peet Viljoen, once a prominent but controversial businessman in South Africa, and Mel, a beauty mogul known for her Tammy Taylor Nails franchise, frequently flaunted a lifestyle of extreme wealth on screen.
However, their transition to life in Florida appears to have been fraught with legal and financial hurdles. Beyond the shoplifting charges, reports indicate that the couple has been transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody following their booking. Mel is currently being held at the Broward Transitional Center, while Peet is being held at a facility in Moore Haven.
Legal Consequences
Under Florida law, organized retail theft of this magnitude is a second-degree felony, carrying a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison. Given their current immigration status and the nature of the charges, legal experts suggest the couple could face deportation once the criminal proceedings are concluded.
As of Tuesday, the Viljoens remain in federal custody. Neither the couple nor their legal representatives have issued a formal statement regarding the charges.
